Briefly on Heat Pumps
The energy that the earth absorbs from the sun per year, is 50 times greater than the energy our entire population consumes. Most of that energy is heat. The heat absorbed into the ground is the key to ground source (geothermal) heat pumps. The remaining heat is stored in our atmosphere and is used by air source heat pumps, like the Altherma system.
What eludes many people is the fact that, even in the coldest of climates, there is still heat stored in the air. An air source heat pump can extract this low-grade heat, and through compressor and heat exchanger, extend it into your home, either through circulating water or forcing air over heat coils. The process is actually just like your refrigerator, in reverse.
